What are insurance endorsements?

Updated September 14, 2026 . AmFam Team

Insurance endorsements are optional additions to an insurance policy. They’re written as amendments to your contract and can help you add coverage, adjust limits, or change terms to better match your needs.

Simply put, endorsements help address coverage gaps in a standard policy and customize your protection to fit your life.

You can often add an endorsement:

  • when you buy a policy
  • during the coverage period, depending on the policy and the change
  • at renewal

How do insurance endorsements work?

When you make changes to your insurance—like adding or removing coverages or increasing or decreasing limits—those updates are often handled through endorsements.

You may consider an endorsement when:

  • your base coverage doesn’t fully match what you own or how you use it
  • you buy something valuable that could exceed policy limits
  • your situation changes—for instance, you start working from home
Example: If you purchase jewelry that increases the value of your personal property beyond your policy’s built-in limit (also called a sublimit), you may want an endorsement to help cover the difference.

Some endorsements add coverage to boost your protection; others exclude coverage where certain losses or events are not covered. Your agent can help you understand what a specific endorsement does and doesn’t do.

Why do I need insurance endorsements?

Endorsements allow you to fine tune coverage to better meet your needs— whether it’s protection for your home, car, or something else.

Depending on the endorsement, you may be able to:

  • increase your coverage limit
  • add a broader range of covered losses
  • change deductibles for certain items
  • tailor your policy to new risks or responsibilities

The goal is simple: to build coverage that aligns with your life and can provide extra peace of mind.

The benefits of insurance endorsements

Insurance endorsements can apply to many parts of a policy—from adjusting basic information, like an address change, to adding protection on your higher-value personal items.

Here are two common reasons people look at endorsements:

Improved coverage for your belongings

Many policies include sublimits or maximum amounts the policy will pay for specific categories, like jewelry. By adding an endorsement for additional coverage on personal property, you may pay a little extra but gain more confidence if the unexpected happens.

Example: You own $5,000 in jewelry, but your policy’s jewelry sublimit is $2,000. An endorsement may help cover that difference by increasing the limit or itemizing specific pieces.

Deductible options for valuable items

Endorsements can also sometimes allow a different deductible for specific scheduled or itemized property. This could help you avoid having to pay a personal property deductible that’s traditionally higher.

Example: Say you have $5,000 worth of jewelry stolen, and your policy deductible is $2,000. That means you may only receive $3,000 toward your claim. However, if you chose an endorsement deductible of $100, you could be reimbursed $4,900 for the covered loss.

Examples of common insurance endorsements

A homeowners policy includes a specific amount of personal property and liability protection, but you may need additional coverage if you:

  • run a business from your home
  • have a finished basement
  • own valuable jewelry or collectibles
  • want added protection for specific types of water damage

Home business coverage

A standard homeowners insurance policy isn’t designed to cover business-related risks. If you run a business from your home, you may need to add home business coverage for things like:

  • certain business property damage: for example, if your business’s office equipment is ruined in a covered event
  • certain liability exposures: for example, if a customer gets injured while at your home to do business

Itemized personal property coverage

Most homeowners policies cover jewelry and other valuables up to a certain limit. But higher-value items may need extra protection. Depending on the situation, you may be able to:

Sump pump failure/water backup coverage

Water backup and sump pump-related losses typically aren’t automatically covered under homeowners insurance. An endorsement may be available to add this type of coverage and help with costs related to water damage from covered backup events.

Endorsements for other insurance needs

Endorsements aren’t limited to homeowners insurance. They may also be available for:

How long does an endorsement stay on my policy?

An endorsement typically stays in force for the rest of the policy term and may renew with the policy, as long as it remains available and the policy continues to qualify. Some add-on coverages may have their own terms and conditions.

How to get insurance endorsements
